Horatio Allen (1802-1889) American civil engineer and railroad pioneer. Assisted in the design of the Erie Canal. In 1828 he was sent to England to study steam locomotives in mine railways. He shipped four dismantled locomotives to the United States and in 1829 drove the 'Stourbridge Lion' along the 16 miles of track between Honedale and Carbondale, Pennsylvania.
