25th March 2019 Charles Gerald Forsberg Memorial at Morecambe Bay

Charles Gerald Forsberg Memorial, Morecambe Bay The top of the memorial to record-breaking long distance swimmer Commander Charles Gerald Forsberg OBE. Born in Canada in 1912, Commander Gerald Forsberg RN was awarded the OBE in 1954. As well as breaking the England-France cross Channel record in 1957 at the age of 45, Commander Forsberg was the first person to make a two-way crossing of Morecambe Bay the following year. His love of open water swimming and the area saw him swim across the bay 29 times. And following his death in October 2000, this memorial was presented to the town by the British Long Distance Swimming Association in June 2002 and was originally located at the Battery end of Morecambe promenade but has since been moved to its present position on the promenade opposite Regent Road. The plaque attached to the memorial reads: This memorial acknowledges the retirement wish of ‘Gerry’ Forsberg to “sit facing wonderful Morecambe Bay and imbibe the matchless view”.
