The present ad-ministration of the university takes the form of acorporation, governed by 12 fellows and 36 trus-tees, a majority of whom must be Baptists. Thebuildings are 13 in number, and include a re-markable observatory and well-equipped gymna-sium. The education, which is non-sectarian, isonly for the sterner sex. Under the presidencyof W. H. P. Faunce, 75 instructors are engaged inthe tuition of an average of 900 students, mostof whom are from the state, and nearly all fromNew England. Itis the seat of Howard Payne (Baptist) College andof Daniel Baker (Presbyterian) College. Thesurrounding country is rich in pasturage, and inthe vicinity are valuable groves of timber.
