Ram's-Head Lady-Slipper Orchid in bloom Cypripedium arietinum Eastern USA
Ram's-Head Lady - Slipper in bloom Cypripedium arietinum Eastern USA by Carol Dembinsky Dembinsky Photo Associates This smallest of North American Lady-slipper orchids is indeed rare but within its range can be locally abundant. Difficult to see because of its low stature and small flower, this most primitive of native North American Lady's-Slipper orchids, seeks cool soils and exposures. It favors neutral or alkaline soils, and can be very abundant where the soil is thin and there are exposed areas of rocky limestone cobble; or in the immediate vicinity of the northern Great Lakes where beach sand sits over limestone bedrock. It is often found growing in the vicinity of the much larger Larger Yellow Lady's-Slipper orchid Cypripedium calceolus var pubescens. Source: Marvin L. Dembinsky, Jr.
