He attended the public schools ofMelrose, and entered the , class of 1919, leaving at theend of his junior year. He enlisted on Dec. 8, 1917, and trained atthe Ground School, at Princeton, , and at ChanuteField, Rantoul, 111., where he was appointed Sergeant. He sailedoverseas in July, 1918, and was stationed near Dover, Eng., untilafter the signing of the Armistice. He returned to the on , 1918, and was honorably discharged. [ 216 ]. WINTHROP WHEELER SPENCER First Lieutenant, , , Two Hundred Twenty-SecondAero Squadron; One Hundred Fourth AeroSquadron, First Observation Group Son of Charles W. and Ethel M. (Wheeler) Spencer; was born atCambridge, Mass., Jan. 29, 1897. He was educated at the CambridgeLatin School, the Noble and Greenough School, and at HarvardCollege, class of 1918. Previous to entering the Air Service, he served for two years inthe 8th Mass. Regt, , and attended the First Officers TrainingCamp at Plattsburg. He enlisted on May 12, 1917, at Boston, and had preliminarytraining at Selfridge Field, Mt. Clemens, Mich. During Oct., 1917,he was stationed at Mineola, He was commissioned 1st Lieut.,Oct. 5, 1917, and was ordered overseas on Nov. 2, 1917, attached tothe 104th Aero Squadron. On reaching England he was transferredto the Royal Flying Corps, and from Dec, 1917, to Aug., 1918,trained at Yatesbury and Salisbury
