Hand arteries and nerves. Artwork showing the arteries (red) and nerves (yellow) which supply the hand. The main artery leading into the hand is the radial artery, which enters the hand at the base of the thumb. It is this artery which is felt during the taking of the pulse at the wrist. Also running into the hand is the ulnar artery (lower left). The three nerves of the hand are, from left to right in the wrist: the ulnar nerve, the median nerve and the radial nerve. Arteries carry oxygenated blood from the heart to the hand's muscles. The nerves carry sensory and motor information to and from the brain.
