MALDI-Biotyper. MALDI-Biotyper machine (right) in the pathology lab of a hospital. This device uses mass spectrometry to identify microbes, including bacteria and yeast, in specimens. It does this by producing a unique protein 'fingerprint' for each organism, which is then correlated against a pre-populated database.
