The Norwegian Jewel, large cruise ship for 2376 passengers makes its way out of the port of Picton and into the main channel of Queen Charlotte Sound. The boat dwarfed the surrounding scenery. It had come from Picton with a population of 4350, not even twice that of the passenger numbers of the liner. A number of cities, especially in Europe are beginning to react to such large vessels docking in their cities and towns and the disproportionate numbers disembarking from the ship. Whilst they bring a lot of visitors to the city or town they do not always spend the money that those in the catering trade would like, prefering to return to thier ship for their all inclusive meal package. However, no doubt, many of the population who are involved in the tourist industry will welcome their visit in the hope of parting some of them from their cash.
