The walls enclosing the European quarter, whichfaces the sea, have been pulled down lately, andhere the French have established themselves. Tothe rear lies the Arab town, still surrounded byits walls and towers. On landing 1 met the Vice-Consul for Swedenand Norway, Olaf Henriksen, a young man wdio in 20 CAVE DWELLERS the course of a few years has made for himself agood position as partner in the hirge, and perhapssole, firm of timber traders in the place. Henriksen isagent for the United Shipping Co., Imt it is seldomthat Danish vessels touch here. After a stroll through the town, Mr, Henriksen FROM SFAX TO GABES 21 led me to his liome and intiodiiced me to his wife,i\ Norwegian hxdy from Christiania. I spent acomfortahle and most enjoyable day in their house,which is outside the town and commands a viewof the harhour. Mrs. ireurikscu is a very lair artist. On thewalls hung sketches of her northern home and ofSfax, painted by herself and showing considerabletalent. The toml)s of Mara1)0uts, the cemeteriesoutside the walls, and the Arab tents in the vicinitywere the subjects that pleased me most.
