. Locomotive engineering : a practical journal of railway motive power and rolling stock . ns which operate thevarious movable parts of the complete chart weighs 60 pounds. This chart shows the various pipes andparts of an air brake on an engine andone car, including the signal equipment, and is colored to show the various airs part of the stroke of the pump. The brakevalve, when operated in service position, moves the equalizing piston. If placed inthe emergency position it remains seated,as shown in the illustration. The blackhand of the duplex gage drops back afew pounds with a service application atthe brake valve, and falls to o with anemergency application. The parts of thequick action triple valve also follow themovements of the brake valve for serviceand emergency applications. These movements of the equalizing pis-ton, gage and quick action triple valve aremade by a set of rods, levers and bellcranks which are connected to the rotaryvalve and located out of sight on the backof the chart. All the movable parts re-spond to the motion of the rotary, except. automatic stopped in 13 seconds, and thevacuum in 22 seconds, the automatic win-ning by 9 seconds and 315 feet. At 32miles per hour the Westinghouse auto-matic stopped in 6 seconds less time and265 feet less space. At this stage of theproceedings the victory of the compressed-air brake was so pronounced that thevacuum train was entirely withdrawn fromthe contest. Thus the superiority of theWestinghouse automatic brake over thevacuum was so satisfactorily demonstratedto this body of railroad men that theequipment of cars with the automaticbrake went rapidly forward. After many delays we have got our newplate ready showing all the parts of theAmerican locomotive. Price 25 cents. AIR-BRAKE CH.\RT. like Mr. Desoes chart, now issued byLocomotive Engineering. In addition to showing all the equip-ment on the chart, the movable parts ofthe air pump, brake valve, duplex gageand quick action triple valve
