Priscianus Caesariensis, known as Priscian, Latin grammarian who worked in Contantinople under the emperor Anastasius (AD 491-518). His major work, Institutiones grammaticae consisted of eighteen books containing many quotes from Latin and Republican authors. This formed the standard reference for Latin students during the Middle Ages. His work was based on the earlier works of Herodian and Apollonius and included quotes from, amongst others, Virgil, Cicero, Horace, Ovid, Livy and Persius. He also wrote treatises on grammar and weights and measures. Taken from a 14th century fresco.
