Douglas MacArthur (January 26, 1880 - April 5, 1964) was an American Army General. During WWI he was nominated for a Medal of Honor, awarded the Distinguished Service Cross twice and the Silver Star seven times. He retired from the US Army in 1937 to become Military Advisor to the Commonwealth Government of the Philippines. He was recalled to active duty in 1941. For his defense of the Philippines, MacArthur was awarded the Medal of Honor. He officially accepted Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, and oversaw the occupation of Japan from 1945-51. He led the UN Command in the Korean War until he was removed by President Truman on April 11, 1951. The relief of MacArthur by the unpopular Truman led to a constitutional crisis, and a storm of public controversy. Douglas and Jean MacArthur spent their last years together in the penthouse of the Waldorf Towers, in NYC. Her died in 1964, at the age of 84, of biliary cirrhosis.
