Berlin, Mitte. Litfaßsäule, Litfass column 1854 -2019. Cylindrical advertising columns invented by the German printer Ernst Litfass in 1854. Named after Ernst Theodor Amandus Litfass, printer and publisher and inventor of the freestanding advertising column. Wall AG was the company operating the system of columns but the advertising rights have been awarded to Stuttgart Company ILG outdoor adverting. The old columns are being removed and ILG is placing newer columns that are taller and have a larger diameter. Many of the old columns contained asbestos and had to be removed. There has been local resistance to the removal of the historic columns
