Ganesha is the god of new beginnings and Hindus pray to him before starting their work. The city has a sizable fishing fleet. Many of the boats were replaced with the help of charity organizations following the destruction of the Asian Tsunami of (Boxing Day) 2004. Mahabalipuram is a popular tourist destination and often alternatively known as Mamallapuram. It was the main seaport of the Pallava Kingdom (7th to 9th centuries) and renowned for its detailed sculptures from that era. Several sites around the ancient city have been granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The Shore Temple can be seen in the background of this image.
