Witkind was a Germanic leader of the Saxons and his chief opponent was the Frankish king Charlemagne during the Saxon Wars 777-785. Charlemagne was the victor and he forced the conversions of pagan Saxons to Christianity. This illustration shows the baptism of Witkind by a Christian clergyman while Charlemagne watches at right.
