There are occasionally pains in the back and loins,and other feelings, creating a sensation of lassitude andweariness; and now and then some local uneasiness isfelt. Varicocele gives to the examiner a sensation as thoughhe were grasping a bundle of soft cords. It sometimesexists to such a degree as to resemble a rupture. In ad-vanced stages of the disease, or disorganization, the epi-didymis becomes detached from the body of the testicle,and is plainly distinguishable by the finger. The resultof all is, that a considerable diminution of sexual powertakes place; and if means are not adopted to arrest a fur-. ON VENEREAL DISEASES. ther break-up of the structure, therenereal appetite will subside al-together. The annexed drawingexhibits a tolerably faithful por-trait of the disease ; it representsthe varicocele to be on the leftside—the side most usually af-fected. The folds formed by the veinslapping over each other are clear-ly distinguishable, and the de-pendent state of the scrotum onthe affected side exhibits very wellthe occasion of it. The treatmentconsists in giving support bymeans of a suspensory bandage, which may be worn du-ring the day, and the use of local refrigerants night andmorning. The state of health is sometimes mixed up withit; and tonics and generous diet are useful. The coldshower bath helps to brace the system. It is a complaintin which, if it be not of
