A door gives access from the operatmg cab to the apparatussection which extends with a cylindrical top to the extremeend of the locomotive. The cylindrical construction nat-urally adapts itself to the protection of the apparatus in-cluded and in addition to this it has the advantage of allow-ing a clear vision for the operator from his normal operatingposition. Motors The motors are of the bi-polar gearless design which wereadopted by the New York Central 14 years ago for operating 259 2fi0 RAILWAY MECHANICAL ENGINEER Vol. 94. No. 5. May. 1920 RAILWAY MECHANICAL ENGINEER 261 liea\y passenger trains between Grand Central Station andHarmon. X, Y. To insure light weight per axle, flexibilityin control, good truck arrangement for curving as well as forhigh-speed running, twelve motors are chosen, each of rela-tively small capacity. They are especially designed to with-stand high temperature, being insulated with mica and asbes-tos. The continuous rating of each motor at 1,000 volts andwith 120 deg. by resistance is 266 hp., corresponding to3,500 tractive effort at the rim of the drivers at a speed mi. per hr. Forced ventilation is employed for armature core is provided with holes for the passage ofventilating air. Ventilating blowers are located above eachmotor armature and deliver air at the commutator end of themotor where it divides, a part passing through the armatureand a part back through and around the field coils where itescapes upwards and is afterwards
