This locomotive became LNER No 4744 in March 1924 and settled down to a busy life hauling commuter trains out of London’s Kings Cross and Moorgate stations plus taking a turn on empty coaching stock workings out of Kings Cross. Over the 37 years to 1958, the locomotive averaged 30,000 miles each year, achieving a total mileage, when BR records ended on 9 March 1958, of 1,084,292. The locomotive had been renumbered as 9523 in December 1946 and became BR No 69523 in January 1949. in 1975 she moved to the Great Central Railway at Loughborough. Since arriving at Loughborough the locomotive has had three General Overhauls, resuming her BR identity as No 69523 in 1987 and then back to her original 1921 GNR identity as No 1744 after the latest overhaul in June 2009.
