Herpes encephalitis. Light micrograph of a section through brain tissue that is inflamed due to an infection with the herpes virus. The white patches are areas of necrotic (dead) tissue. The blood vessel at centre is surrounded by lymphocytes (white cells with dark nuclei), which is characteristic of an inflammatory immune reaction. Early diagnosis and treatment with anti-viral medication is essential, as the condition has a high mortality rate.
