In 1898 departmental libraries were formed for the departmentsof civil engineering, raining engineering and physiology. In theColumbia University quarterly for March 1900, Mr. James H, Ganfield,the librarian says, More study rooms of every description areneeded; a series of science rooms, with the choicest booksupon adjoining and accessible shelves. Many of the so-called. ;5i departmental libraries which are now scattered here and thereshould be brought back to the common center, The Quartorly for December 1900 says: There is a ^;rov/ing feel-ing among all interested parties that the creation of libraries in science divisions has been a far as possible all books should be housed in the main libraryand made accessible as possible. Evening v/ork is practically I impossible in a departmental library, In his report for 1900 - 1901 Mr, Canfield says: During theyear a large number of departmental libraries have been merged inthe general library-, the department interested taking the initiativein this movement. It is beginning to be clearly recognized thatwhen the interests of all concerned are taken into consideration,the departmental library as necessarily administered in this uni-versity is not desirable.
