An early 20th century French advertising poster from World War One, 1914-1918, showing shells and gold coins heading towards a German soldier on the battlefield. In 1914, the French were 'invited' to exchange their gold for paper. Gold was needed to pay for foreign imports. The artist was Fernand Jean Barbier: (1875-1931)
