The work now presented to the pub-lic is believed to utilize, more than anyof its predecessors, the many valuable re-searches of recent years into the rich ar-chives of this and other nations. 2. Most of the briefer treatments of thesubject are manuals, intended for pupils inschools, the conspicuous articulation sonecessary for this purpose greatly lesseningtheir interest for the general reader.
