Foundling Hospital. 18th century engraving showing the grounds of the Foundling Hospital at Lambs Conduit Fields, London. This was a charitable organisation that looked after abandoned babies. Those admitted were raised to the age of fourteen for boys and sixteen for girls, after which they were sent for apprenticeships. The hospital was founded in 1739 by Thomas Coram, a sea captain, and this building was opened in 1745. Engraving from Chamberlain's 'A New and Complete History and Survey of the Cities of London and Westminister' printed at London in 1770.
