I.—Normal Training in North Carolina Before the War. The first school iu the State to add the depart-ment of Normal Traiuiug was Union Institute,Randolph County, in 1848. The principal ofthe school was Braxton Craven. In 1851 UnionInstitute became a normal college. The normaltraining department had iu three years become theleading feature of the institution. In 1852 the gov-ernor was made chairman and the superintendentof public instruction was uuide secretary of theboard of trustees and the superintendent reportedthe work of the normal college to the General As-sembly. In connection with the institution was amodel school and teachers in training were requiredto do practice work in the model school. In 1859Normal CoUege became Trinity College. W. H.
