Richard Coul-ter, who was one of the state supreme courtjudges from 1846 to 1856 by appointment,and was afterwards elected to the P. Wells was prepared for college inthe public and private schools of Greensburgand entered Jefferson college at Canonsburg,Washington county. After leaving collegehe resided for a time in Philadelphia, wherehe wooed and won Miss Mary R. Byerly, thedaughter of a wealthy shipping merchant ofthat city. They were married in 1838, andresided for two years in Philadelphia. Thenthev removed to Uniontown. Mr. Wellswas admitted to the Fayette county bar in1831.
