Bay at the Back of the Ocean on the west side of Iona, looking north from the track to Port an Fhir Bhreige, Inner Hebrides, Scotland, UK

Bay at the Back of the Ocean, looking north from the track to Port an Fhir Bhreige. A large sandy bay at the centre of the west side of Iona island with Bay of the White Stones to the south and Port Ban to the north and the machair (bright green pasture on lime-rich sand composed of broken shells) to the east. Sheep and cattle come down to the beach to eat seaweed. A 9-hole golf course was laid out on the machair in 1880s, and extended to the present 18 holes in 1905. This is possibly the Camas Bay where legend tells that Columba befriended a storm-battered crane, and where he had himself taken down to the machair in a wheeled cart to tell monks working in the fields of his approaching death.
