The pipe enters thefnmt connection tlirough the side of the projecting portion of the shell, then turns andenters the boiler through the front tui)e sheet, about tliree inches above the top of theupper row of tubes, then passes along to within about eighteen inches of the back tubesheet, then crosses over to the other side of the boiler and finally turns downward, so tliHt thefeed water is discharged between the tubes and the shell in the coolest part of the feed water, being compelled to traverse the entire length of this long pipe, has timeto acquire a hii^h temperature betOTe<;oming in contact with any part of the boiler shell,and thus any injury to the siiell from lo3al contraction is prevented. 82 THE LOCOMOTIVE.
