Zollicoffer, who had been commissioned as brig-adier-general in the State service, and placed in com-mand of all the troops collected at Camp Trousdale. The Sixteenth Regiment was composed principallyof young and middle-aged men, of robust health andstrong constitutions. The regiment remained at Camp. Trousdale near eight weeks, and performed the usualroutine of drill and guard duty. So sudden a changein the manner and habits of life told on the health ofthe men to some extent, and quite a number weretaken sick, but were soon convalescent. With the ex-ception of the casualties resulting from measles, therewere few deaths and very little fatal sickness in theregiment during its stay at Camp Trousdale. The Sixteenth Regiment The regiment was ordered to East Tennessee aboutthe 2ist of July, 1861. The men were jubilant at theprospect of entering into active service. The greatbattle of Manassas was fought about this time, and theenthusiasm of the boys was boundless. They allwanted to move to the front.
