GYPSUM STATUE OF INDIAN WOMAN, we find some exquisitely chiselled figures by anIndian artist of Peru, self-educated, named LuisVOL. I. z 338 TWO YEAliS IN PERU. [cHAr. XVI. Medina/ a native of Huamanga in the valley ofAyacucho. They consist of the descent of ourSaviour from the cross, in which the artisticarrangement of the grouping is impressive in theextreme. This is small, but it is done in marblefrom the valley of Medinas birth-place. Of thesame material, and in this room, by the same handis a holy-water pot. In another room we find moreof Medinas work in a bust of Coronel Santa Maria,a sleeping Venus of life-size, and two statues,-^oneof an Indian woman, and the other of an Indianman. These last-named are of gypsum, or sul-phate of lime, but for life-like expression, for natu-ral pose—as even the very veins are represented onthe leg of the man—these figures are unrivalled. In one of the corners of the upper story was themodel of a mountaineer in clothing made of coarsematting
