John Dee (1527-1608), English astrologer, mathematician and alchemist. Dee was educated at Cambridge University and was an original Fellow of Trinity College. He gained Queen Elizabeth I's favour by selecting an astrologically favourable day for her coronation. As a member of the royal court he gained a reputation as a sorcerer and alchemist. Dee spent much of his time casting horoscopes and making contact with the spirit world. In later life his interest in the supernatural increased despite the suspicions of those around him, and he ultimately fell into disrepute. Artwork from 'Greater London' (Edward Walford, 1883-4).
