GOOD IN ABSTENTION. The man who discontinues some expensiveand useless habit is benefited whether he doesso in response to the promptings of his moralnature, or because decreased income suggestsretrenchment. Man is always in danger whenhe can satisfy every wish. If things comeeasily to him he loses diligence and his char-acter is weakened. There is always good inabstention whether voluntary or MOTHERING SUNDAY. Mothering Sunday, in the times gone by,is said to have been a festival, and the cus-tom to which it was sacred should give per-petuity to the day. Then, it was the practiceto pay homage and respect to the old motherat the old home around which clustered thefondest recollections. It must have been aday devoted to feelings more holy and enno-bling than Thanksgiving Day brings forth, be-cause in Thanksgiving there is always a feel-ing of self, which keeps it from being entire-ly divorced from the bustling, busy, everydaylife. Mothering Sunday was solely de-signed to bring happiness to the mother whoselife had been deprived of that fountain of joy,the presence of her children. It offered aguaranty to her that, although the duties ofmature life might have put a check upon theaffection of her children for her, that affection still glowed with all the old time adult children turned to the *light ofhome on that day, bringing with them some
