CLOSING THE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS IN FRANCE, 1902.—The early 1900s caption reads: “This picture brings our story down to August, 1902. The dominant political party in France is opposed in some respects to the Catholic parish schools (ecoles paroissiales). Several of these have been closed by the police, because of their refusal to comply with certain new laws which they consider oppressive. The people have in many cases taken the part of the evicted priests, and there has been considerable rioting, though without serious bloodshed.”
