He came to America in 1752 and enteredthe Revolutionary army, April 1776, in Chester County,Pennsylvania; later was a sergeant under Anthony Waynewhich rank he held to the end of the war. It is said that hehad his hands badly frost-bitten crossing the Delaware withWashington, and for that reason he was forced to wear glovesduring the remainder of his life.
