The course of the Simunjan mine railway

The Simunjan district lies on the north east side of the Sadong river about hours by car from the state capital Kuching. Access is via a car ferry which is to be replaced by a bridge in 2013. It has 2 claims to fame. Firstly coal was discovered there in 1854 and mined for some years thereafter. The mining was supervised by miners from Derbyshire UK overseen by Robert Coulson. Secondly Alfred Russel Wallace stayed for several months in 1855 where he collected most of his beetle specimens.
