The current of water in the channel underneathforces the buckets down stream, the latter delivering in the op-posite direction at the top. By using a double set of buckets, one at each end of each bucket, the water may be delivered onboth sides simultaneously. A little experimenting will indicatethe proper size of the boxes, which depends upon the velocityand volume of water in the channel as well as the amount to bedelivered. It may be made altogether of wood, with theexception of the bearings, but for the larger sizes (of from eightfeet to fifteen feet or upward) it is advisable to brace well withwrought-iron tie rods. The water boxes may be made of wood, but tin is serviceable—the size chosen to be in direct ratio withthe force of the current. It is not usual to paint the wheelsunless iron enters largely into the construction, in which casered lead may be used* At the Fancher Creek Nursery, in Fresno County, a wheelis used eighteen feet in diameter, and carries sixteen buckets, which empty into a trough sixteen feet above the ditch. Thewheel lifts about one cubic foot in two seconds. The Miners Inch.—Irrigation borrows its water meas-urement from the miners, and horticulture in the foot-hills hasf
