Theinterest of the locality de-pends upon several cir-cumstances. It lies at oneof the gateways to thePolar Sea; its western-most cape is one of the Arctic Pillars of Hercules whichstand guard across Smith Sound ; it is a real Arcticoasis, its abundance of vegetable and animal lifebeing in striking contrast to the icy wastes of MelvilleBay and Kane Basin north and south of it, and tothe desolate barren shores of Ellesmere Land west-ward across Smith Sound. It is also one of the earliestknown of high Arctic regions, and for the past hundredyears has been the principal focus of Arctic effort, nofewer than six expeditions having wintered within itslimits.
