After initial studies in medicine, he took up anthropology while studying in Paris, France. He then returned to the USA and carried out surveys of North America's indigenous people during the period 1898-1903. He was the first curator of anthropology at what became the National Museum of Natural History. This photograph, from the Harris and Ewing Collection, dates from between 1905 and 1945.
