View at St. Catherine's monastery from Monks Path. St Catherine's monastery, Sinai Peninsula, lies at the foot of modern Mount Sinai in Saint Catherine at an elevation of 1550 meters. This Greek Orthodox monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The official name of the monastery is Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai, and it was built between 548 and 565. This is also the site where Moses is supposed to have seen the burning bush.
