Leland Stanford (b. March 9, 1824; d. June 20, IS!):!) acquired a greatfortune in California. Inspired by a dream at the time of his little sonsdeath, he determined to found and endow an institution of learning in hisState. The result was the Leland Stanford Junior University, whose directendowment was princely, and whose indirect endowment is expected toamount to $20,000,000 or more. Florence Nightingale was born, May, 1823, in Florence, Italy, of Englishparents, and, prompted by philanthropic instincts, turned her attention to therelief of humanity. After study in various nursing schools, she was sent at 712 TRIUMPHS AND WONDERS OF THE XIX™ CENTURY. the head of a corps of trained nurses to care for the sick and wounded sol-diers of the Crimean war, in which position she displayed marvelous energyand ability. A grateful public subscribed for her a testimonial of $250,000, which she devoted to the foundingof a training-school for nurses. Clara Barton (b. about 1830) lefta clerkship in Washington to en-gage in the work of alleviating thesufferings of the soldiers of the CivilWar, on the battlefields and in hos-pitals, a work she performed withrare energy and self-sacrifice. Sheafterwards aided the Grand Duchessof Baden in establishing her hospi-tals during the Franco-Prussian war,and was decorated with the GoldenCross of Baden and the
