Taj Lake Palace hotel and Leela Palace on shore of Lake Pichola. These are 5 star luxury hotels that are concentrated on and around the lake and also one of the most expensive hotels in the area. The Lake Palace hotel is one of the most famous hotels in India. Located in the middle of the Lake Pichola in the lake city of Udaipur, the hotel, with its white structure, has a striking look. The hotel occupies most of the island on which the hotel stands, so it looks like the hotel is emerging from the waters of the lake. It is a 5 star luxury hotel, that converts a former royal summer palace into a heritage hotel. The structure was built in 1746 by the Maharana Jagat Singh II of the Mewar dynasty, built as a summer palace. The palace was built facing east so that morning prayers to the sun god could happen, and was built with inspiration from Rajasthani and Mughal traditions. However, the past couple of centuries saw the palace slowly sinking into decay. During the 1960's, the then Maharana, Swaroop Singh tried to do restoration of the palace, and finally decided to convert this into a heritage hotel. In 1971, the Taj group decided to take over the structure and convert it into a luxury hotel, now offering a total of 83 rooms and suites, with garden view and lake view options. The hotel offers a boat option for guests from a private jetty, located further down from the City Palace. The hotel also offers a chance to book a special dinner boat for an exclusive dinner on the waters of the lake.
