The fortress of Camulos (a war god), pre-Roman capital of the Belgic tribe the Trinovantes whose most famous king was Cunobelinus (Old King Cole). After the conquest of AD43, the Romans built their own town to the E which became an important colonia for retired Roman soldiers.
