The Cardinal from Mechel's "Triumph of Death" 1860
There is some difficulty in ascertaining the real meaning of the designer here. It has been described as the Cardinal receiving the bull of his appointment, or as a rich man making the purchase of indulgences. Death is twisting off the Cardinal's hat. Handcoloured engraving from Chretien Mechel's "La Triomphe de la Mort" (The Triumph of Death) published in 1860 in Stuttgart. It is believed that Mechel's engravings were not after Holbein, but after sketches by a young Peter Paul Rubens (1577~1640).
