'Last Dance' _Starling mumuration on the Blackpool North Pier at dusk. Many, many thousands of starlings gather at sunset to avail themselves of the shelter offered by the steel girders and supporting structures of both the Central and North piers, which deflect the winter winds lashing the north-west coast. The huge numbers of local birds are swelled by others joining from the continent as they perform stunning aerial acrobatics, swooping and diving as if one solid, black radio-controlled mass … fascinating to watch.
