These retired towards the mountains, and aSemitic race, the Elyma^i, the Elam of Scripture, occupied themaritime plain. Both of these races, however, gave way before theArians, who ultimately formed the dominant race here as in Persisand Media. The only important one was Susa, the Shushanof the Bible, centrally situated near the junction of the hills and theplain on the left bank of the Choaspes.
