The first water-works were commenced in 1799. A steam-enginewas placed in Chestnut street, near the Schuylkill, by means ofwhich the water was elevated to a basin in Penn square, and fromthence distributed to the city in wooden pipes. The quantity ofwater thus obtained was soon found to be entirely too- small to supplythe increasing demand, and the works were abandoned in 1815, afternearly $700,000 had been spent upon them. In 1816 the works atFairmount were commenced, the water being again raised by steamto an elevated reservoir. Steam
