Street railroads, also, operated by horses or by electricity,connect the depots, the different parts of the city, and the varioussuburbs by frequent trips, to which are added several lines ofcoaches, and numerous rapid herdics, and the more elegant and easycoaches. Several lines of ocean steamers connect the city with Europe, —the Cunard, the Warren, the Allan, the Furness, the Leyland, the< Juion and others; so that one may sail on one or more days of theweek for England, Scotland, France and Germany; and, less fre-quently, for some Mediterranean port, Australia, and far-off LOWELL-RAILROAD DEPOT. 160 GAZETTEER OE MASSACHUSETTS. The lines running to South America, the Gulf of Mexico, the WestIndies and ports along our own coast and the British Provinces, arenumerous, and their trips frequent. The railroads generally havespecial lines of telegraph along their roads, while the public lines areso numerous that almost instantaneous communication may he heldwith every part of the country, and, by means of the ocean cables,with Europe.
