To avert this, the leaders of theNational Liberal party, Von Bennigsen, Miquel,and Lasker, declared themselves willing toenter upon some compromise, which offer wasaccepted by the chancellor. A compromisewas finally agreed upon, satisfactory to bothparties, the National Liberals sacrificing theclause with regard to the press, while the gov-ernments consented to relinquish the prepon-derating influence of the administration overthe courts. This compromise was not only bit-terly attacked by the Catholics and the Social. AU«SBURG, GERMANY. Democrats, but also by the Party of Progress(Fortschrittspartei), who thus hoped to drivethe Natioual Liberals from their position as theleading party of the Reichstag.
