He graduatedfrom this school in 1880, and in the same year matriculatedin Brown University. He was, however, unable to remainthere to finish, but subsequently pursued, and privately com-pleted, the course. He then began the life of an educator,filling the most responsible and creditable positions of thatnature in his native city and county, until, in 1885. he waselected to the chair of Ancient Languages and Instructor in. 341 342 THE AFRO-AMERICAN PRESS. methods of teaching and school management in the VirginiaNormal and Collegiate Institute at Petersburg, Va., whichposition he still holds. The professor has had ten years experience as an educator,and few can be found who equal him. He possesses executiveability of a high order, and his decisions may be generallyrelied upon. He is a popular linguist, reading with easeGerman, French, Hebrew, Latin and Greek. Our subject hasa wide reputation as a brilliant orator and services in this respect have been constantly in demandfor ten years. He is one of the best known men in his state,and has a national reputation as well, and has been frequentlyhonored as a distinguished leader of his people.
