Ant-mimicking spider. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the ant-mimicking jumping spider Myrmarachne formicaria. Its large mouthparts and jaws are seen, along with its head and legs. Spiders have eight eyes (ocelli) for vision and sensitivity to light levels. A jumping spider has four eyes on the front of the head for binocular vision. Ocelli cannot focus or see in colour, but are very good at detecting differences in light intensity. This spider moves on three pairs of legs, imitating an ant, with its front pair of legs raised in the air. Magnification: x20 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
