Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Corthylio calendula) Sacramento County California USA

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet (Corthylio calendula) is a tiny, very active songbird that breeds in the mountains and northern forests of North America. In the winter it can often be found in suburban yards where it can be attracted with a birdbath. The male's red crown feathers are only visible when the bird is excited or alarmed. The female Ruby-crowned Kinglet does not have the red crown feathers. In addition to the red crown, this bird can be identified by the broken eye ring, white and black wing bars and yellow feet. Its food consists primarily of insects but it is also fond of hummingbird feeders and suet.
